Praying Together in Jerusalem - Becoming Elijah

Becoming Elijah

Source: Elijah Interfaith Institute

Special Event: Elijah – Man, Story, Transformation and Source of Our Inspiration

Thursday, September 1, at 6:00 pm Jerusalem time / 11:00 am ET

As part of the September meeting of Praying Together in Jerusalem, we will hold a special session dedicated to the person of Elijah. Often we are asked why the Elijah Instituted has taken the name of this prophet, especially as the biblical Elijah was a zealot. The time has come to discuss this.

The recent publication of Daniel Matt’s “biography”:Becoming Elijah: Prophet of Transformation by Yale University Press provides us with an occasion to explore these and other matters related to the Prophet Elijah.

Daniel Matt is a scholar of Kabbalah, who taught for many years at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. His books include The Essential Kabbalah (translated into eight languages), God and the Big Bang, and his nine-volume annotated translation of the Zohar, The Zohar: Pritzker Edition, which has been hailed as “a monumental contribution to the history of Jewish thought.”

Rabbi Dr. Alon Goshen-Gottstein is acknowledged as one of the world’s leading figures in interreligious dialogue, specializing in bridging the theological and academic dimension with a variety of practical initiatives, especially involving world religious leadership. He is both a theoretician and activist, setting trends and precedents in the global interfaith arena. He is founder and director of the Elijah Interfaith Institute. A noted scholar of Jewish studies, he is widely published in the areas of rabbinic thought, interfaith theory, theology of religions and Jewish mysticism and spirituality.

Alon Goshen-Gottstein, founder of the Elijah Institute will hold a dialogue with Daniel Matt on different aspects of Elijah – biblical, rabbinic, Christian, Muslim, mystical, messianic and more. Matt’s work opens a window on to the meaning of our work. Our work, in turn, offers a new chapter in the ongoing evolution of the figure of Elijah and his contribution to humanity’s spiritual transformation.

The discussion will be followed by prayers, live from Jerusalem's Mount Zion.
