From socially motivated lay historians to lay censors: Epistemic conformity and defensive group identification

Abstract: This article examines why people cooperate with the silencing and censorship efforts of authorities that deprive them of historical knowledge. We analyze two motivational factors that account for people’s adherence to the “official” historical narrative and their willingness to serve as lay censors silencing and suppressing alternative historical narratives of the group. The first factor is epistemic conformity which is the motivation to believe in the veridicality of the consensual ingroup’s historical narrative. The second factor is a defensive form of identification with the group in glorifying and narcissistic ways. Polish and Israeli examples are discussed to illustrate societal backlash to historical discoveries that present the national ingroup in a negative manner.

To, co najwyższe, wymaga lojalności bezwarunkowej. Czy da się zinterpretować tę wskazówkę w sposób niekonfesyjny i, co więcej, niefideistyczny, czyli w oderwaniu od wiary typu religijnego? Czym byłby wówczas odpowiednik Boga? Otóż jedną z możliwości jest uznanie, że chodzi o najwyższe wartości, które wymagają lojalności. Ich obecność w naszym życiu społecznym jest w dużej mierze poza naszą kontrolą, a zarazem jest niezbędna do odczuwania głębszej satysfakcji.

Widzieliśmy się już za wrotami tego piekła

Cieśla Jankiel Wiernik brał udział w powstaniu w obozie zagłady w Treblince 2 sierpnia 1943 r. Był jednym z niewielu więźniów, którym udało się przeżyć. Po dotarciu do Warszawy spisał swoje przeżycia, które w 1944 r. wydało polskie podziemie jako broszurę „Rok w Treblince”.

Guide to Jewish Cemetery Preservation in Western Ukraine

This website provides information and guidance to assist leaders, activists, and volunteers in the care and rehabilitation of Jewish cemeteries in western Ukraine. Included here are “best practices” (processes, methods, tools), plus a collection of resources (texts, websites, videos) relevant to the work, selected case studies of local and other cemetery projects, and links to independent organizations working to document Jewish cemeteries in the region. Although the guide has been developed for the specific needs of Jewish cemeteries in western Ukraine, portions of it may benefit individuals, organizations, and projects beyond the region and in other areas of heritage preservation and care. The information has been pulled from a broad variety of foreign and domestic resources working in a number of different disciplines.
