The text of this statement is based on a working assignment given by the Office for Mission and Ecumenical Affairs to its Committee for Witness and Dialogue in May 2002. The Committee was asked to clarify in a theological declaration the “strained and dynamic relationship between witness and dialogue”, particularly taking into account the recently growing discussion about the churches’ missionary task. This assignment led to a vivid discussion process involving members of the Office, the Committee and other interested persons, and finally the present text was produced and adopted by the Office in its meeting at the Centre for Ecumenical Work in Frankfurt on 29 October 2003.

Together with the faith of the Fathers and of the Torah, the Temple of Jerusalem - at least until Titus destroyed it in the year 70 - was the heart of Judaism, with the exception of certain groups such as the Essenes and the Samaritans. The Temple was also one of the places for meeting and prayer of the first disciples of the Risen One, who were regarded by the authorities at times with suspicion, but with esteem by the people, with whom they shared their faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, of Sarah and Rebecca, of Rachel and Leah. They were all aware that they belonged to the one people of God with whom the Most High had made a Covenant with his promise to the Fathers which, after the Red Sea crossing, was sealed on Sinai and open to the promise and hope of universal renewal and redemption, in accordance with the messianic announcement of the prophets.

Since the Shoah, a noteworthy change has taken place in the Lutheran churches concerning our view of Judaism and the Jewish people, a change of a kind previously unknown in the history of our churches. In its Driebergen Declaration (1991), the European Lutheran Commission on the Church and the Jewish People (Lutherische Europäische Kommission Kirche und Judentum, LEKKJ), which represents twenty-five Lutheran church bodies in Europe, rejected the traditional Christian “teaching of contempt” towards Jews and Judaism, and in particular, the anti-Jewish writings of Martin Luther, and it called for the reformation of church practice in the light of these insights.

At its annual meetings, 2001 – 2003 the European Lutheran Commission on the Church and the Jewish People (LEKKJ) studied a number of liturgical texts, and especially the prayers which have as their theme the relationship between the church and the Jewish people. This study revealed that obscurities, misunderstandings and anti-Jewish formulations both old and new continue to be perpetrated. It demonstrates, therefore, the urgent need to devote as much care to liturgies and to liturgical texts as to other documents devoted to the subject of Judaism. Our common religious motivation for this central affirmation is based on the biblical statement that the human being is created in the image of the living God, in His likeness (cf. Genesis 1:26). God is the Holy One and the Creator of human life, and the human being is blessed and obliged by His holiness. Therefore every human life is holy, sacrosanct and inviolable. According to Leviticus 19:2 God's holiness constitutes an essential imperative for the moral behaviour: "You shall be holy for I am Holy, the Lord your God!"

Już po raz szósty w Kościele katolickim w Polsce obchodzimy Dzień Judaizmu, dzień dialogu chrześcijańsko-żydowskiego. Czas poświęcony szczególnej modlitwie i refleksji nad tajemnicą związków chrześcijaństwa z judaizmem; Kościoła Chrystusowego z Izraelem, ludem Bożym, ku któremu Bóg Ojciec całego stworzenia zwrócił się ze specjalną miłością ze względu na odkupienie całego rodzaju ludzkiego.

W czwartek Kościół katolicki w Polsce obchodził po raz szósty Dzień Judaizmu. Hasłem tegorocznych uroczystości było "Bóg zawarł z Izraelem przymierze miłosierdzia". Główne obchody miały miejsce w Białymstoku i Tykocinie, ponadto okolicznościowe spotkania i modlitwy odbyły się w kilku innych miastach.

W jaki sposób możliwe jest tu uzdrowienie, jak może zostać usunięte napięcie między nieskończonym miłosierdziem Boga a Jego absolutną sprawiedliwością, nie jest to po ludzku wyobrażalne. Pozostaje niepojęta tajemnica zła - mysterium iniquitatis. Ale pozostaje też Boża miłość jako niepojęta tajemnica i wiara w jej zwycięstwo.

Czym właściwie jest dialog? Samo słowo, pochodzące z języka greckiego, oznacza rozmowę osób. A więc nie są to jakieś układy czy negocjacje, gdzie się uzgadnia interesy i zawiera kompromisy, ale życzliwe spotkanie osób. To język macierzysty ludzkości. Wiele sporów i walk pomiędzy ludźmi wynika bowiem z braku wzajemnej znajomości, który rodzi uprzedzenia i lęk. Kto pragnie żyć w pokoju, ten będzie dążył do poznania prawdy o sobie i drugim człowieku. W dialogu chodzi zatem o wzajemne poznanie się, wzbogacenie się na drodze obdarowania, współpracę z innymi i wspólne poszukiwanie prawdy, tworzenie dobra i piękna w duchu pokoju, o uczenie się także od innych, korzystanie z ich przemyśleń i osiągnięć.
