Appropriately, the Torah concludes with the letter Lamed (in 'Israel') and begins a new with the Bet (in 'Bereshit'). Together, these two letters spell Lev—the Hebrew word for heart. This hints that the entire Torah serves to soften and purify the human heart, inspiring a life of spiritual wholeness, just as the prophet Ezekiel proclaimed on God's behalf (36:26): 'A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.'
